Drains! They’re something people take for granted and don’t usually think about – until they stop working. Our Geelong plumbers received a call this week for a somewhat agitated client who’d spent much of the weekend battling a blocked sewer drain. You can imagine their distress, not to mention some of the mess they’d endured.

Plumbers take sewer problems seriously

Problems with sewers are an issue to be taken seriously and we gave this job high priority, sending a team straight around to the domestic property. We inspected the property’s drains and found that the fixtures discharging into a gully to be fully blocked.

Our plumbers tackled the sewer line with our drain-jetting gear, gaining access through an inspection line under the property’s decking. We were able to clear part of the line draining to the boundary shaft, where we suspected we’d find the primary blockage, but the actual problem was still not obvious. Adding to the complexity of the job was the fact the deck was not part of the original house construction and featured modified pipes from work which didn’t appear on amendments to the sewer plans.

In-drain inspection

Some of our plumbing jobs require extensive inspection to locate the cause of a problem and for this task we had to head indoors and remove the toilet pan so we could perform an in-drain inspection using specialised plumber’s CCTV equipment.

Eventually we were able to locate the boundary shaft underneath a pathway, which we excavated to access a boundary shaft ground vent. Using our 5000-PSI drain jetting machine we flushed the line via a gully trap and then put the CCTV gear into action again, performing an inspection of the boundary shaft and trap, as well as the downstream sewer leading to the mains connection point.

Misaligned joints and multiple cracks

The CCTV inspection revealed the boundary shaft had significantly misaligned joints and multiple cracks on the lower junction and the boundary trap itself. Our plumbers addressed the problem and then discussed the findings with our relieved client.

Although the problem is now resolved we recommended the client engage a Geelong plumber to perform regular and frequent inspection of the house’s drains to ensure no future problems. We also recommended periodic preventative jetting to maintain drainage performance.
